Common Web Mistakes Small Businesses Make - Part 2

Depositphotos_26106853_l-2015.jpgThe importance of having an online presence for your small business has never been more important than it is in today’s competitive world. We have already learned your presence needs to include a website which is mobile friendly, up to date and includes user friendly navigation. But what other things do you need to consider when developing your site? Below are a few more common web mistakes to avoid for your small business.

1. No clear goal for your website

Every website needs a goal, beyond just existing. Why do you have a website? What purpose do you want it to serve for your business?

  • Educate visitors about your products and services?
  • Establish brand credibility?
  • Generate more leads?
  • Serve as a location where customers can place online orders?

Once you have determined your goal, you can tailor your content and design to achieve that goal.
2. Not identifying your customer
As a business owner, you understand how crucial it is to know your target audience. It is just as important with your website. With this knowledge, you can decide on the tone of your content, and choose a design that is strictly professional, fun and trendy, or somewhere in between.
3. Designing before having content
Content must always come first! The information you provide is what leads potential customers to visit your website. There are a few questions you must think about when writing content:
  • What do you need your website to say?
  • What pages should be included?
  • What will be the purpose of each page?

Design should always be tailored to content, not the other way around.
4. It’s difficult for people to contact you
The number one reason to have a website is to attract potential customers to your business. How are these potential customers going to become actual customers if they can’t contact you to purchase your goods or services? Make your contact information easily visible or clickable. If people struggle to find a way to contact you, they will end up contacting someone else.
